Developing the ability to recognize visual patterns builds visual discrimination and critical thinking skills necessary for academic achievement.

Visual Discrimination: Exploring and Solving Picture Patterns presents 30 reproducible worksheets of increasing complexity. Each worksheet provides the student with the task of examining pictures to identify patterns and sequences.

While each worksheet presents the problem and possible solutions on a one line layout the problems could as easily be presented within a matrix. These problems are the type of non-verbal problem seen on non-verbal ability tests like the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test and the Raven's Progressive Matrices Test and in the non-verbal section of tests like the CogAT and OLSAT.

The publisher suggests this book as appropriate for Grades 2-8. We'd have no hesitation in starting a smart K student in it but we wouldn't expect them to be able to finish the book quickly. The puzzles definitely get more difficult as you progress through the book. We doubt that the book would be of much use to children beyond Gr 5 except for remediation.

This book is great for teaching patterns and sequencing. Logical thinking and deductive reasoning as well. I would highly recommend this book, not only because it really helps with analyzing, classifying and logical thinking but because it is really fun as well.On the book and the recommendation it says grades 2-8 but I would think that grades 1-4 would be more appropriate. I would definitely recommend this one!

I bought this book for my son (3rd grade). If your kid needs to prepare CogAT test in school for gifted and talented student test, it will definitely help nonverbal section (figure matrices, figure classification).

One of the most important skills we can teach our children is critical thinking. This is a workbook designed to teach the skill of visual discrimination, the ability to recognize similarities and differences between different things. The lessons in this book are pictorial analogies that are arrange in lessons of increasing difficulty. This begins with fairly easy patterns and ends with very complex patterns. My son loves this book and happily works through multiple lessons at a time. I have seen great progress in his ability to perceive patterns and to discern subtle differences among objects. I am very happy with this book.

I use this workbook for remediation purposes as I work with dyslexic students. My kids have so much fun with these activities that they don't realize I'm "working" them! Useful for any young learner as well.
