You are here:Home > Learning Differences and 2E > Visual Processing
In simple terms visual processing refers to how our brain handles information that we see. Many adults and children have excellent vision but their brain fails to process the information as efficiently as it should. Sometimes the issue is with the eyes. Sometimes with the brain itself.

Tracking issues arise when eyes don't move smoothly from one place to another. This can make reading difficult as the eyes skip, missing lines or going back to lines that have already been read. You'll see a child develop more efficient tracking when they're learning to read as they become less dependent on their finger to keep their place.

There may be a focusing issue. If ones eyes don't automatically focus where you're looking reading and other visual activities may require an effort that most people don't need to expend, perhaps resulting in a headache or an unwillingness to pursue visually demanding activities.

Perhaps the difficulty is in the brain itself. Visual closure refers to the ability to generalize from seeing part of an object to the complete object (you'll see young children develop this as they go from being completely unable to find their socks or the milk in the fridge to being able to - they need to develop the ability to "close" the image when what they see is just part of what they're looking for). Visual form constancy is another developmental skill - understanding that an object doesn't change because its orientation does. Young children may not be able to work out which jigsaw puzzle piece goes where without picking it up and turning it around. An child with more developed visual processing may be able to spot the missing piece even if it is lying on the table oriented differently from the way it will fit into the puzzle.

The resources on this page can be used, perhaps in conjunction with vision therapy with a professional, to improve different aspects of visual processing.

Visual Perceptual Skill Building encourages proactive learning of the following visual skills:
  • Visual Motor/Graphomotor Skills
  • Visual Discrimination
  • Visual Closure
  • Visual Figure Ground
  • Visual Form Constancy
  • Visual Memory
  • Visual Sequential Memory
  • Visual Spatial Relationships

While recommended for use with children from Pre K- Gr 4 this series can be used therapeutically with older children and adults. The cds with the same title contain pdf files of the books in both black and white (as the books are printed) and color. They are more suitable for use by therapists wishing to copy sheets for multiple children than by a household with one child although if color perception is an issue you may wish to get the book on cd.

Visual Perceptual Skill Building includes pre and post tests so you can quickly identify the areas in which most work is required and quantify progress. These are simple enough for a parent to use.

The grade level recommendations on the other titles are for children processing at a typical rate. If you are purchasing because of visual processing difficulties a product recommended for a typical 1st or 2nd grader may well be appropriate for you. Have a look at the product descriptions and sample pages to help you decide.

SET is a game of spatial reasoning requiring identification of similar and different attributes in abstract shapes drawn on colored playing cards. It can be played solitaire or with a group.

Memory Challenge is a computer game which builds visual memory. The level of difficulty is very adjustable making the same program usable by children from when they're ready to handle a mouse through to adults.

The LUK Learning System was designed to develop cognitive skills in young children. The exercises are all visually based (no need for words although adding language and discussing the problems adds to the experience.) Within each level there are exercises specifically designed for Visual Perception but if this system appeals to your child we recommend purchasing other titles. They all develop visual processing. The LUK books are used with a controller. The Bambino level titles use one controller and the MiniLUK Challenger and MiniLUK Advance a different controller.

The Greatest Dot-to-Dot books contain dot-to-dots of unexpected complexity. The Super Challenge titles include variations on the traditional dot to dot perhaps involving following compass directions or connecting shapes. Two of the seven titles are included below. The rest can be found in The Advanced Dot-to-Dot books category.
