Behind the Scenes
Each page contains a paragraph with a statement. The student(s) pose inferential questions to ascertain the situation which makes the paragraph true. The questions can also be used to brainstorm possible solutions.
The first example is: "Out for a drive, he stopped for gas, but when he filled up, the fuel indicator never budged. Why not?"
The solution:
He was filling the tires of his care with air (a gas). Concept: A gas is not a liquid or a solid. Gases, liquids and solids are differentiated by their properties. In a gas, atoms do not stick together; a gas is compressible. The atoms of a liquid or solid do stick together and the substance is not compressible.
