Until the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test® was adopted by the New York School District we hadn’t often been asked for suggestions for children as young as two. This year parents are planning ahead and we've had a number of calls from parents of two year olds wondering if there is something that they could start doing now with their children with a view to their child being tested in the future.
As you know there is a huge variation in the range of normal development of two year olds. If your child is past the point where they're chewing paper then you can work with them with the titles here. Keep it relaxed and low key. Work in short sessions. Have fun and your child will learn.
If your child is still at the board books stage then the SpecialLUK system is the place to start. Once they're ready you can move on to the BambinoLUK system and paper books.
If your child is ready for books the Pre K Book Bundle provides titles in core reasoning skills, visual perception, mathematics, verbal reasoning and more. The manipulative blocks are not required to use the books but they are utilized in the next level of books and since young children learn through play and experimentation they're a great resource to have around.
The Critical Thinking Company book set and LUK Learning System are two different, complementary approaches. The LUK Learning System can be played with independently once your child has been introduced to the play system. Your child will remain dependent on you to work with the books until they're reading.
We've also included a couple of our favorite games - Tangrams are a classic and Tangoes Jr makes this classic puzzle accessible for preschoolers. Trucky 3 is one of the best logic games we've seen for young children. Your child can begin simply playing with loading and driving the trucks and as they mature move on to loading the trucks to meet the challenges presented.
Language development and traditional alphabet and number knowledge are also important. We've included some titles to help specifically with this in the list below too.
Finally we have some titles for you - the parent. Teach Your Kids to Think is an easy read full of suggestions for how you can modify what you're already doing with your children so that they'll learn more thinking skills. Testing for Kindergarten discusses the tests commonly used prior to school entry. The Thinking Skills for Tests Set has sample questions in the nine cognitive areas the OLSAT tests for. Read this now so you know what to expect and use it with your child when they're older.
Young children like, and benefit from, variety so the recommendations here are comprehensive. If this looks like too much pick and choose from individual titles. All of the titles included in the bundles below are available for individual purchase. Choose something that you and your child will enjoy doing and you can't go wrong.
