Suggestions to Prepare for the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test®
OLSAT-8® Level C recommended for administration in Gr 2
Here are our suggestions in order for the typical highly capable child. The first two are the most important.
Building Thinking Skills for core verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills
Thinking Skills for Tests Set for questions like those your child will see on the actual test and parent information to help you understand how you can help.
OLSAT C Practice Test for a test in the format of the OLSAT
Primarily Logic for logic. Logic is one of the areas tested for in the OLSAT. It is also a skill used to guess effectively.
Math Analogies for number and figure based analogies. Patterns in Mathematics is another option for this. Primary Grade Challenge Math is a good option to build math problem solving with highly capable children (it has more than you'll need for OLSAT testing)
Think Analogies for the game in the back using pictures to develop analogy pairs and provide opportunities for discussion.
Visual Discrimination for higher level non-verbal thinking activities.
Look! Listen! Think! for a children who isn't as attentive to verbal information as they could be.
Language Smarts D has a few verbal comprehension and reasoning questions. It probably isn’t worth purchasing just for those but if your child will be doing a standardized language arts test in conjunction with the OLSAT® this is an excellent choice (earlier in the school year you might prefer to get level C. From about March on your highly capable child should be ready for Level D and it will give them something to go on with over summer)
Mathematical Reasoning D includes arithmetic reasoning questions. It probably isn’t worth purchasing just for those but if your child will be doing a standardized math test in conjunction with the OLSAT® this is an excellent choice (earlier in the school year you might prefer to get level C. From about March on your highly capable child should be ready for Level D and it will give them something to go on with over summer).
