CogATŪ Test Preparation Guide (Critical Thinking Company)
While we sell the entire Critical Thinking Company range of books and software, and love their award winning products, we do not recommend their CogATŪ Test Prep bundles.

We recommend our Test Preparation Bundles for Gifted Learners Taking the CogATŪ or, if you have a specific need, please browse our selections for the CogATŪ by grade or by skill.

The contents of each of The Critical Thinking Company's grade level bundles are based on national performance standards for that grade level. If you have a gifted child they're probably doing advanced math and working at a higher level than their peers in other areas. You don't need a grade level math book and you almost certainly need a higher level of Building Thinking Skills than would be used by the average child of your child's age.

Gifted children, by definition, have cognitive abilities two to three years ahead of those of their age peers. The most difficult questions on the test will be at this higher level and you'll want to expose your children to questions they find difficult so that they're prepared for the unknown during testing.

It is not at all uncommon for children to be working at different levels in different materials. If you have a limited amount of time a bundle might seem like an easy purchase choice to ensure that you get wide topic coverage but your child's time would be better spent if you spent more time at the beginning choosing material at a level which will challenge your child without frustrating them rather than getting material that simply reviews what they already know.

The mix of material is heavy on math and logic and is entirely worksheets. Particularly for younger children we suggest adding some games and puzzles and to the mix. It is the ability to attack and solve new challenges which differentiates gifted children from the rest. The CogATŪ test aims to identify children with this ability and one of the easiest ways to prepare for this is to provide challenge in lots of thinking skills areas.

Many parents find us very close to their child's test date and have limited time for preparation. We strongly recommend mixing up the format of material used for preparation if you've got a short time before testing. Your child will happily work for longer periods if you've got some software, some games and some puzzles.
