Standardized testing is used throughout the United States to provide students and teachers with information. Different tests have different objectives. Some standardized tests are used throughout the United States. Others are state specific.
Individual school districts may have leeway to make some of their own decisions. This is particularly true in respect of the tests used to qualify for gifted program entry. For example, we're frequently contacted by California parents and asked for recommendations for their child who will be taking the GATE test. G.A.T.E. is an acronym standing for gifted and talented education. The test (or tests) that is given to determine whether or not a child qualifies for a G.A.T.E. program depends on the school district. We advise parents to contact their local school district to find out what test their child will be taking. Tests used, and criteria for program entry are not the same in every school district in CA.
